racial profiling by companies

I am unequivocally in support for tougher laws on terrorism, but I thought I was immune to such racial profiling (even though I have a 'middle eastern' name), and I think we need to take a new approach on terrorism whereby innocent people aren't inconvenienced or profiled.

I thought I was immune to such profiling because I haven't done anything to produce such suspicion.

Four months ago PayPal froze my account because my name matched a "security list", meaning a terror list - not because of suspicious activities, because the four transactions I made under $10 would constitute as "suspicious".

After contacting the Bank of England (the bank which PayPal deals with), they were suppose to check the name, address, and other information and see if it match that of mine - PayPal didn't do this, instead their system (i suppose) matches PayPal customer's names with that of those on the list. If they did a proper check they would have known I am not those people on the list.

My "first" and/or "last name" (they wouldn't specify what combination) matched the list, so their system automatically froze my account.

On top of that they made me submit my Passport, and ID to "clear" my name. At first I was reluctant, because of such ridiculous claims, I settled with submitting my driver's license.

My question is this, this is unfair categorizing and targeting an entire race because of the actions of a few. Terrorist shouldn't even be considered the same race or religion, because their actions are not justified by any group, race or religion.

If Western governments all over the world believed this, they would do much more to prevent such stupid actions in ever happening.

I am beyond furious over the embarrassment, predicament, and what I could possible face in the future, just because of my name. Events like Maher Arar scare the pants out of me.

Is there anything I can do, in terms with PayPal, since they did not follow proper procedure, and basically racially profile base on individuals names?

Thanks!

The Liberals are lost...

Dear Liberal friends,

when I heard paul martin was going to resign I was devasted (devested even worse when Jean Chretien left). The Liberals have lost their way, way lost.

Being a die hard liberal, it pains me when I see my party in such disarray. I actually thought about voting for the conservative party during the last election.-scary thought, eh. I know I was scared myself I became very insecure for a couple of hours.

The reason why I feel the party is very lost is because of their attempt to buy votes during the last election. please don't hate me for saying it. but its true. Paul martin and Jean Chretien were fiscally responsible, and then came the mult-billion dollar announcements. Paul martin would never do that, that was the only thing that disappointed me.

The liberals need to focus, as much as I hate it the conervatives cheap method of just focusing on five priorities does work. But liberals need to get it straight. Start to focus, and stop trying to buy votes with mult-billion dollar announcements.

Remember we earsed the worst finacial mess this ountry ever saw. We produced year after year of fiscal growth, and budget surpluses.

Another thing is we have to differentiate ourselves from the cheap NDP who are stealing are votes. their literally stealing our platform. Going left isn't going to help.

I want to see the fiscal responsible liberal party I fell in love with.

it doesn't matter when change is the wrong change

OK. I've been getting a lot of responses to the fact that I would prefer to have to Liberals in power forever. not true. but i feel the liberals have been punished enough.

1) there are in severe debt
2) they have lost loyal members
3) a lot people are in trouble

What makes me angry are the reasons for their upheaval.

What is wrong with a party that represents the views of Canadians? I keep hearing that "oh the Liberals can't be in power forever", "they can't be a natural power", "change is needed, just because the liberals have won the last 3 elections".

well. how would you feel if you were fired from your job after 30 years because, well change is needed? If your preforming well, if your producing results, why should you get fired? hmmm..well you shouldn't.

The Liberals were producing solid economic results, they wiped the largest Canadian financial mess produced by the Mulroney-Conservative government. They represented Canadian views. The people responsible for the scandal left the party, its like your entire department being fired because the VP of the previous ran deficits and carelessly spent money.

If the alternative was the conservatives, which it was. If the Leader of the party had never been outside North America. If the cabinet was filled with rookies. If the health minister threatened Ontarians lives during SARS. If the Finance Minister ran deficits in Ontario, and then lied about it. If the party is known to have right wing tendencies. why did they win..BECAUSE we wanted change.

I'm getting use to the Liberals losing the Jan 23 election. but the conservatives try to pin the scandal card on the new liberals, that's just sad.

Now to go back, what is wrong with having the same party win, if its doing a good job?

Harper is a disgrace to Canada

The conservatives like to take the high ground on everything from ethics to protecting Canada.

The Conservatives rhetoric is quite honestly getting quite tiresome. The conservatives are pathetic.

What makes me angry is all those Canadians who voted for them. I love democracy, its the greatest thing out there. but After the Liberals warned, after die hard liberals yelled and screamed that this "polished', "centred" Harper government is the same extreme right wing, hidden agenda party it has a reputation for. After Harper's comments in American newspaper's, after his outspoken MPs (then being fired), he is still voted.

Change was need indeed. that change was delivered when Paul Martin became Prime Minister. I am 19 years old and I have a couple of role models, three of which include Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Jean Chretien, and Paul Martin. All for their respective accomplishments.

I love politics I stayed up all night the day the Liberals won their minority and stayed up all night in my University residence lounge, beating off friends wanting to watch the OC or what not, to watch my politics.

It is sad, pathetic and un-leadership like for the leader, for the Prime Minister of Canada to not attend the largest (ever) gathering of dignitaries, scientists and researches for one of the largest cause in the world; what I'm I talking about? the AIDS conference.

Dear my conservative friends, those who like to defend their leader with such honour and applause. I would sincerely like to know why your leader, my Prime Minister of this country did NOT go to the AIDS conference. What other important function did he have to attend? hmm?

are Canadians deaf and blind?

Canadians decided to re-elect a party with the greatest hidden agenda this country has ever seen.

>Hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on PR, buying Harper new outfits to make him look more personable.

>Inproperly collected regrations fees, which should have been donations

>shifting 5 priorities, health care wait times is no longer the "5th priority", its been replaced by "stregthening Canada domestically and internationally"

>lies, lies lies,

>Disrepecting our fallen soliediers (not lowering the flag) which the conservatives backed off, because they knew they were wrong

>shifting Canada's neutral stand

>more Canadians dying in Afganistan

This government has got to go. They are playing games, by trying to reduce the liberal war machine by passing laws like water that restrict party donations, trying to bankrupt the liberal party. these are the games this party is playing.

Please someone, answer me this question? how did they ever win?
